Default 98 suburban 2500 shift linkage

1998 shift linkage. So I have a 1998 Chevy 2500 suburban. 100th suburban. I went to put it in to gear and it was a little hard but eventually made it. I shut it off on a hill and could not get it back into gear for the life of me. I pulled down on the shift lever real hard and something snapped not sure if it was the cable or what. When I got it home I took apart the plastic around the column and the knee bolster and a piece of black plastic fell out. As I moved the gear shifter around it doesn't look like it's operating the cable but looks like the mechanism is just going from side to side opposed to front and back . It's as if I engage the gearshift and the whole mechanism beside just flops around inside. I don't know how this is supposed to operate can anyone help me.
