I have a 1999 Chevy suburban with 110K miles and the 4wd does not work. Here is the problem.

The 2wd and 4wd buttons do not light up and pressing the buttons does nothing. any ideas of how to get the 4wd working? I checked the fuse on the panel inside the dash and its fine.

I had that on my 2000. It is a different body style however. Mine I had to replace the panel with the switches it is one piece.

If you have not already, try re-seating the connector to the buttons, they might just be loose....fully disconnect and reconnect it, there may also be a relay in the circuit, might check the under hood relays as well.

Thanks so much, we ended up changing the actuator only to find out that it still didn't work. Then my husband began web searching the issue on bing and found out there are 2 fuses for the 4wd .we changed out fuse #24 but didn't know to check Fuse #2 which was blown. So we put the old actuator back on and it all works great :-)

The fuse popped for a reason, that old actuator might be the cause...$02

I would have to concur with that statement re: fuse possible bad switch

When we put a new fuse in #2 it worked, then popped after a few seconds( this was with the new actuator).. So we put another fuse in and now its been 3 days and it all is still working great.

If it happens again, I might have to look into it more.

Just wanted to let you know that I was stuck at the bottom of my driveway after a snowstorm because the transfer case decided it had a logic error and refused to switch into 4wd. I was looking for the location of the fuses and your pointers lead me to the correct ones. I pulled the fuses (both were good) waited 10 seconds and reseated them. 4wd switched right over after that. Thanks
