Question Advice for driving down hill

When you drive downhill, is it worth to shift to manual and drive it in lower gear ? It can damage the transmission. If I use brake continuously it will damage the brake. What would be the best approach ?

I use both.
The trans should be capable of helping slow the vehicle down as long as the engine is not allowed to overspeed.
You would not shift it into LOW, , but D2 or intermediate gear is usually alright as long as you keep the speed down. On a very steep hill , both (L) Low and brake will help maintain a safe downhill speed.
You will probably notice the trans shifts to a lower speed going up the hill and those gear positions usually will suffice.

How big of a hill ?
The Rocky Mts. ?
I use tow mode on the big hills so I don't have to drag the brakes all the way down following a slow poke.
