belt

Make sure the tensioner is tensioning the belt enough. Also make sure that the new belt you put on is the correct one for your car. I replaced a belt a few years ago and it squeaked until I found that the parts store sold me the wrong belt.

I just replaced the belts, tensioners, and idler pulley on my '01 Suburban. The squealing finally stopped (95% anyway) after putting on the fourth belt. The kicker is my old belt, with 135,000 miles on it and cracks galore, did not make a sound. I also cleaned off my pulleys with a wire brush (there was quite a bit of grime on the grooved pulleys). Go figure, maybe I should not have cleaned them, but why wouldn't I? By the way, what little noise there is follows the belt as it goes around the pulleys, indicating that it's the belt. Also, I was told to spray a little water on the belt as the engine is running. If the noise stops, it's the belt that's the problem. As I mentioned belts, I also replaced the AC belt, but was told that the tensioner (which in my case is low to the ground and subject to dirt, water, and salt) was bad, so I had that replaced too. But what little noise there is comes from the surpentine belt. My next move, should there be one, is to go to the dealer and have them deal with it.
