Bent frame
I have a 1987 1500GMC Suburban with a bent frame at the motor mount and wondered if it fixable. The truck took an impact in the front that forced the front of the motor downward and right, enough that it broke the transmission support at its rear due to the deflection, and the driveshaft had to be disconnected to move it since it the deflection made the shift linkages put it in park and it could not be taken out of park. There is no damage to the motor or transmission, but on the left side, it would require some serious frame heating to bring the motor mount area back into the right spot. I really do not know why the frame bent where it did without totally destroying the motor, but it did. For shops with frame straightening ability, do you think they could do if if I bring them the chassis minus everything in front of the firewall, just a motorless, fenderless, hoodless chassis? I have hydraulic equipment that could be used to straighten it, and I observed a body shop one time heating a frame with a cutting torch to get its huge flame front needed for that,(not cutting) and they were successful. Would the heat needed to bend it back remove the temper in the steel of the frame or would the carbon steel take it? Has anybody straightened their own frame? This has a TBI 350 cu in motor and set up to pull 10,000 pounds, so really want to get it back on the road. I should have kept up with junk yards years ago to find a wreck with a good frame, but didn't.
