I have a 98 Suburban which I've had for 8 years, and we've recently decided to give it a makeover rather than replacing it, since it has been running well.

The stopping power has always been less than impressive. Curious if anyone out there has upgraded the front brakes to a "Big Brake" system such as SSBC, and if they were pleased with the results.

I don't tow often, nor heavy. I don't race. I have factory wheels. I will soon, however, have a driving teenager!

I have no experience with the SSBC BigBrake kits but they only provide larger piston calipers for '98 models, no increase in rotor size. Still, anything might help since the OE brakes are marginal for the size of a Suburban. You might want to try Performance Friction, Z-rated, Carbon-metallic brake pads first. I found that they significantly improved the braking on our '99 model.

 

I put the SSBC Force 10 SuperTwin TK 2-piston aluminum calipers and high performance pads with the slotted rotors to cut down on stopping distance when I added the larger tires to my '96 Tahoe. They seemed to help alot.

Now I am looking for a higher performance master cylinder (more pressure/flow)so I don't have to press the pedal so far.

 

There is a TSB on the 95 and maybe others for a different brake proportioning valve.
I replaced it on mine and "what a difference"

 

jljbtm, I'm new on here. Not sure what is TSB? Is that a recall? Also looking for a solution for 99' burb weak brakes specially the front. Put on aftr market slotted rotors, they have lasted alot longer than stock. But when all six of us and loaded for an outing stopping isn't upto par. Any info is appreciated.

 

A TSB is a "technical service bullitin" sent to Dealers.
We found a tsb on the 95 3/4 4X4 for a upgrade on the proportioning valve which is mounted on the back of the anti-lock device, mine was mounted on the driver front fender. I replaced it $136.00 in 05 and it made a huge difference, I then also replaced the pads with ceramic type and it was even better. When it comes to brakes or any emission control part don't skimp at the local parts stores.

So check with your service advisor or a GOOD mechanic.
