So after all of the issues ive had with my wifes 01 Suburban a few weeks ago i put intake gaskets on it to fix the cold start issues and have had no problems since then until tonight. We were on our way home from shopping and it all of a sudden started running rough at 75MPH on cruise. I got it home and changed the spark plugs and wires and it still has a miss on cylinder 8 and 1. I changed coilpaks from a cylinder that wasent missing and it did not fix it. I checked the injectors and they are good. I did a compression test on #1 cylinder and no compression at all. Cylinder #3 has 180psi. i did not do a test on #8 because its damn near impossible to do. I put 160 psi in the #1 cylinder for a leak test on TDC with the valves closed and air is going to the oil pan not through the intake. I pulled the valve cover off and no problems with valve springs. Also i got under the truck and seen antifreeze in the bottom of the oil pan and tracked it back to the pass. side head. I have a blown head gasket on pass. side. But dont understand why the is no compression on #1 cylinder (driver side). I also put 160 psi in #3 cylinder and it was going to the oil pan to but i have 180 psi compression on that cylinder. Any suggestions on what to do next, i dont think it would be a burnt valve on #1 cylinder because no air was coming out of the valves when i had the valve cover off.

next step pull #1 and #8 pistons and check the rings and the bores?

 

Is it possible the head gasket for cyl #1 is bad and that is why its not getting any compression? if you have gone this far, I'd pull the heads off, inspect the pistons for any holes, replace head gaskets and re do your compression check..

 

Im just going to put a new motor in it and be done with it, by the time i pay for labor for head gaskets and no telling what else they will find i can buy another motor and put in probably faster than replacing both head gaskets, thanks for inputs though!

 

yeah, new Gen III motors are cheap, they are highly used in the aftermarket world...

you would get better MPG not to mention doubling towing capacity...

 

remove the valve covers and crank it over. are the valves moving for the effected cylinders and do they have proper lift. the camshafts lobes do have wear issues. may not be your problem but its an easy check
