Default A/C Compressor Leak

I have been told I have a compressor leak in my 96 Suburban with 5.7 engine. Apparently, there is a seal behind the clutch that's causing the loss of refrigerant slowly. Asking of that can be repaired at an A/C shop. Or do I have to buy a complete NEW compressor?? I'd like to avoid a major expense like replacing a compressor, if possible. Any ideas, recommendations appreciated!

I think it would be cheaper, and better if you replace the compressor, especially if it's the R4 compressor. Since the compressor hasn't seized, you likely can avoid replacing the condenser and orifice tube (and accumulator, if the system has always had "some" refrigerant in it.

Get a rebuilt compressor to save some money.

If the necessary tools are available that seal ,usually if there is enough room, can be replaced without removing the compressor.. Best left to a shop that has the tools.

Replace the compressor for a once and done. If there is any play in the bearings or shaft damage / wear, then the seal will not last.
