I assure you that the solution will not be to "install a more powerful motor", the motor is plenty powerful and is not the root cause of the problem.

 

After an overnite soak with a low of 11 degrees here in KC area, mine opened. About a week ago after our ice and snow storm, it opened while breaking thru the ice and snow. I think the temp was in upper twenties.

 

[22F is not all that cold.

Let me dig around a talk with a few people and see if there's any thing that may address this. ]

Take your Tahoe in and have the struts replaced, it appears as though there may have been some produced that don't quite cut the mustard.
The current issue struts are produced by Stabilus and are holding up fairly well judging from warranty claim records..

There is a new design strut that is just coming to market that is not nearly as susceptible to temperature changes as the current design, another auto producer holds the patent on it at the moment and GM is negotiating usage.
