Default Distributor replacement help

I have a 1999 Tahoe 5.7. It was running decent before, but felt a little sluggish and the check engine light came on showing the P1345 code. I am trying to replace the distributor, but having trouble. I've lined up the marks on the balancer with the notch on the block while also lining up the distributor cap. After installing it yesterday, I couldn't get it to fully startup. It would sputter a few times then die. I set everything again and believe I was a tooth or two off on the gear at the base of the distributor. I rotated the distributor one tooth and now it cranks, but immediately revs up to 5000 rpm, then dies. I'm at a loss now and I don't want to do anything else in fear that I might damage the engine. Need some guidance please.
