Question Does a cold air intake have any negative impacts to consider

I only want to get a more throaty sound. I do not need more power or anything.

Are there any negative impacts to consider?

Is there something more appropriate like a regular intake or filter replacement?

You can replace the paper filter with a direct replacement K&N filter and not change the whole intake. You'll get the benefit of a better filter that will last forever but you won't get the sound. I've had a K&N in just about every car I've owned, and really see no drawbacks.

Just be sure not to over oil the filter when you "re-charge" (clean) it. The excess oil can clog the MAS air flow sensor.

If you want the sound you have options and you dont. If you buy just the filter yea you get a better filter but you still have the factory restrictive intake. Ive done alot of shopping around from kits to home made and found that buying a name brand bolt on kit is the best, you may pay more but they did the research for the best results so there is no draw backs. You gain power performance and gas mileage along with that beloved sound. Personally I would go with the K&N its just a safe bet for things like this in my opinion only based on that Ive only had K&N.

Yeah there are alot of companies that make cold air intakes now, but K&N has been around a long time. I had one on my '93 5.0 Mustang.

If it's sound your looking for, go with a cat-back exhaust. Nothing like the sound of Flowmasters!

How loud is a cold air intake vs a catback exhaust.

Let's say on a scale of 1 -10

....I already kind of no the answers, I had an Acura Integra years back and did all these mods. I am just not sure what to expect with my Tahoe.

Is anyone runnning a K&N cold air on a new model tahoe?

I have the K&N intake and Flowmaster exhaust on my '07. The intake sound is noticeable when you mash the throttle. Not so much during regular driving. The exhaust adds a nice low rumble all the time.

I agree, I actually have the full K&N intake and you won't really notice it until you get over 4k rpm or so, even then it isn't loud, it just has a deeper tone.

Just be aware that a CAI will not noticeably improve hp or mpg. If you get one, make sure that it's sealed box like the OEM and not one that sort of seals to the bottom of the hood or not at all.
