Hi All,

I have a '98 chevy suburban with a small block V-8 350 - with a blown rod. I might have a deal $$$ on a 8.1L Big Block 496 V8 Chevy from a pick-up. Anybody know if I can exchange the small block for the big block without much fuss?

Welcome to the forum.

I doubt it. Mounts, exhaust, computer(s), tranny mounts, etc will be different most likely. Of course, it depends on your def'n of fuss.

Thanks for the info - will consider other options. Still have to pull off the manifold to see why she's banging... Guess I'll make decision after getting a peek. Anybody know how I can pull off the AC without it blowing up in my face? I'm a novice and very much appreciate any/all advice. Any suggestions on books too?

 

Another point against the 5.7 to 8.1 swap is the 4L60 is simply not made to handle the torque of the 8.1, and if your truck is a half-ton 4x4, it will probably put you over the front axle weight capacity. In short, pretty big project.
