fuel pump replacement '99 Burb
My mechanic replaced my '99 Suburban's fuel pump three years and 24,000 miles ago for $840. The Delco part was $440 back then. The same part is now $465 at the Chevrolet parts counter. Since I'm now unemployed for 3 months, I'm not just going to hand the keys over to my mechanic for another $850+ beating. I'm thinking that there has to be a reasonable alternative to the factory pump. Is it possible to install an after market pump w/o removing the gas tank? The pump hasn't gone out completely, ie., it requires a thump on the gas tank when it won't start. Thanks for your help.

There has to be something else wrong with it. I just replaced my fuel pump, today, and it was slowly dying after 92,000 miles and roughly 11 years later.
Personally, I would be extremely annoyed if an OEM replacement like an AC Delco or Delphi pump module died after 24,000 miles. Also, search online by doing search or your part number. For example, an AC Delco for my Tahoe would be part number MU149 but this has since been updated to MU1777. This means I have found OEM parts that go for $365+ selling as low as $125 plus shipping. They are the correct part just with the old sku and is considered "new old stock".
You do have options like the above or even an aftermarket like Walbro, which is what I replace mine with. However, I reused the sending unit and just replaced the pump itself with a 255 lph high pressure Walbro. Kits like these will be under $125 & generally includes the pump, wiring adapter harness for the pump, pressure hose, clamps, & new sock (intank filter). The job is rated at 2-3 hours but can take longer depending on the condition of your equipment.
Good luck!
