Gas leak

I have a 04 Tahoe Z71 and I smell a strong gas odor around the gas tank . Has anyone else had this problem ? I want to get a heads up before I actually drop the tank to try and figure this out

Welcome to the forum.

You need to check the evaporative emission control system associated with the gas tank.

OK I'm assuming that is on top of the fuel tank?

It's not on the GMT900 model but I'm not sure on yours which is a GMT800. You might check for any YouTube videos on the subject.
