Help Needed: Changin out P/S Pump
Hey guys,
This is actually my first post on this forum...
My wife's 2002 Tahoe all of a sudden quit having power steering yesterday. There was no warning; she started the car in a parking lot and it had stopped working (and she could barely turn the wheel).
I assume that the P/S pump has gone out, as there is no sound coming from it when I cut the wheels with the engine running. There is no leakage from any of the hoses, and the car steers and drives as long as you really turn hard, which tells me that the box is still ok (I am hoping). Do I have to remove the pulley to remove the pump or can I do it after I get it out? The mounting screws look to be behind the pulley, but surely I can remove the whole bracket? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks for your help...

i would look for leaks in the hoses before you took the pump off because they are all fitting that have to be bought from the dealer to be replaced. $$$ i would look at eaverything else it could be before i did that. as for the pully its a surpintine belt so as long as you get that off then you shopuld be alright to leave the pully on. a hainse or chilton manual should tell you exacty how to take it apart right.
here's your problem, the shaft on your pump snapped, I would call gm because they have a recall on certain trucks for that condition. and yes you need to remove the pulley from the shaft to get to the bolts behind it. Well in your case, you should be able to pull the shaft and the pulley right out of the pump. just put something under it cause you will have ffluid come right out. You will need a pulley removal tool cause you will still need to get the pulley off of the shaft to put it on the new pump. Autozone should have the rental tool for that. good luck..
