Default How to Shut Off 12v When Ignition is Off

So I've tried searching online but with no luck--does anyone have step by step directions on how to switch the three 12v outlets in my 1999 Suburban LT.

I have all three outlets taken...GPS, cell phone charger, and Sirius receiver--I'd hate to stay home for two days and my battery be dead when I try to start it up.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Nick

Default switch

do you want them on a 'switch' or do you want them on/off with the key?

nherweck Welcome to the forum
if you have reasonable access to the power source for those 3 outlets you can install a relay that can be operated with a switch or by the ignition...

I think shutting off with the ignition would be best for me--that way I don't forget to flip a switch.

How would I go about doing that?

Thanks for the prompt replies!

In a nut shell,

You locate the wire providing power to the outlet(s)

you cut that wire and install a 12v normally open relay ( the relay acts as an in-line switch that can carry the voltage and current needed so you don't have to run large size wire to a switch to a reachable place)

you connect a smaller gauge wire to operate the coil that closes the relay when power is applied, that "control" wire can be control by a manual switch or tied into a circuit that only has power when the ignition is on...

You can find relays at your local electronics supply house or at many security system suppliers....

Ensure that all electrical connections are heat shrinked or taped up so nothing shorts out...

in2pro-I've never worked with relays...what type would I need? What do I do with it?

Is there anything I can do without needing to get extra parts?

Thanks again everyone!

Default Wiring

I think you might find more help for your setup on this site:

I used this site a lot when wiring up my cars.
