Default knocking in lower half of engine

I think i have a rod or bearing making some noise. can you change this by just removing the oil pan or do you have to pull the motor? it looks like i can get the oil pan off without pulling the motor but i dont know . just wonder if there is someone out there that has tried.
thanks for your help

You can remove the oil pan and roll new bearings out and in, however usually that is only a temporary repair. Once the rod starts knocking the crank is banging against the rod and knocks it out if round. The proper thing to do would be pull the engine and let a machine shop polish or machine the crank depending on how much it has been damaged. Machine the rods back into round and plastic gauge the bearing clearance to get the proper bearings.
