most auto parts stores have scanners to buy. actron makes some budget friendly models, easy to use. some people will argue, but for ocassional use, they are fine. www.actron.com you can see different models, read about them.

 

The best scanner you can get would be from AutoEnginuity.com

That it is,but well worth it,I can't remember how many,but I think you get so many years of updates or something like that,it's the only scanner you'll ever need.Plus it covers MOST GM vehicles(gas or diesels) with the GM Enhanced bundle,when you think of diagnostic fees alone it would pay for itself very quick.

 

Harbor Freight and Amazon.com are the lest expensive I have found if you are looking for a code reader and the ability to clear them.

I have the Actron CP9180 AutoScanner, and have found it to be very helpful for the shade-tree DIY'er.
It will record drive data and you can print it out and send it to your PC.
the real time monitors are at nice also, the cord is long enough that you can have the scanner outside the vehicle while you are under the hood.

You can buy one from AutoXXXX, take it out into the parking lot scan and reset your codes, than take it back in for a full refund. This was not my idea, but a store manager who told me they could not reset my O2 sensor code.

If you have Adance Auto Parts store nearby, they will do a scan for free.
