Hi All
I am new to this site and Suburbans. I just picked up a 1999 Suburban with 81k and was wondering if there is any maintenance that should be done. I do not know the history but can tell the vehicle has been taken care of. any help would be apreciated.

If you want to be completely comfortable, and trust the vehicle, you must assume that nothing has been done.

You don't have to do everything at once...
Oil and Filters
Lube
Transmission Oil
Belt
Coolant

Just take it a step at a time, that's the only way I would be ok with mine.

 

Besides coolent, you need to look hard at all the hoses, heater hoses included.

 

going off the mileage and age personally i'd do the coolant,trans flush and tcase service and check everything else over

You're probably going to get as many opinions about Oil, as there are Users on this Forum !

But, all "Major" Manufacturers Oil is good stuff. There are some that have more or less of certain chemistry in it (like a detergents), and the key to Engine Life is not so much the type, but the condition (regular changes).

There are Synthetics, quite expensive, but at your vehicle's age and mileage, I'm not sure that I'd recommend those. AND, you don't want to mix usages. Use one or the other, don't switch back and forth !

So, take a look at what's recommended for your specific vehicle, and go with that. We all like to think we know a lot about a lot, but, I give the Engineers who put your ride together a LOT of credit. They spent a lot of time and energy testing to get it as right as possible.

They're worth paying attention to.

 

Your owners manual will also help guide you on items that need to be serviced.
The list given above is a pretty sound place to start though

Items to also consider looking at are the motor/transmission mounts, sway bar and end link bushings.
