If the map database is on the DVD, then to update, you have to get a new DVD. For the GM Nav, it costs $200.

The Garmin is updatable over the internet and w/ lifetime maps, it's free.

i just read on the pioneer website its 120 for a sd card but not sure how often i will
have to update in alaska.. not much changes here.. i really just wanted the dvd screen, bt for hands free calling, hdd for music.
