Default RE: Nav install with no onstar??

Is the onstar disabled or did it come from the factory without OnStar? I belive you have to have the onstar module connected to the factory Nav Radio so you can have turn by turn guidance as you follow the maps on the screen, and for Voice commands to work too. Also, if you have phone numbers stored in the address book in the nav or look up phone numbers to business on the nav, you can't press call on the screen and be connected to them. you would have to manually dial them on your cell, which isnt too bad. If you don't have the console, or rear audio controls, In my opinion it would be cheaper and easier to remove the factory radio and install a aftermarket Nav unit. You would have to get a wiring harness that is designed to work with out Bose. I would get a Double din unit so the install would look factory. You could get options like Bluetooth capabilies for your cellphone, Satellite radio, HD radio Ipod control etc etc. I have the factory Nav myself and would have gone aftermarket but at the time, there wasn't any adapters availble to use my rear audio controls fully.

Maybe someone else knows for sure but i dont think you can. It has to be connected to the onstar module inorder for everything on the Factory Nav to work right.

BUT you DON"T have to pay for any of the OnStar services to have the Factory nav work. You could choose to disconnect onstar service if you want by calling them, and IF you really want to make sure that no one can track you, you can disconnect the GPS antenna and the Celular Antenna off the Onstar module itself. Just leave the power and the NAV to the onstar module plug connected. That way, onstar can't track you, but you still have full operation of your factory nav. This shouldn't activate any trouble codes. Hope this helps

2007 Tahoe LS and no Onstar!
You do not need Onstar for the NAV unit to operate. All the Onstar module does as far as NAV is concerned is interface the microphone to the NAV to enable voice commands. Everything else will work with the exception of voice commands. You do however absolutely have to connect the VSS to the NAV.

Correct! You do not need onstar or have onstar hooked up for nav to work!.
All you need is the Nav plug kit (also known as VSS wire kit) for turn by turn tracking, which I got from JP customs
I just finished installing my #102 headunit and had it flashed at the dealer.
All works fine....The radio volume is alittle low so I will probably install an aftermarket amp.
Other than that I am very happy and could not have done it without this forum!!!!!!!
I upgraded a bare bones stock Tahoe LS/non Bose/non Onstar with a nav unit for under $1000 total.
Thanks!
