Default new owner *edit* - PROBLEMS with battery?

Just picked up a black 2007 Tahoe LTZ with 30k miles... loaded with every option, I think. When I was test driving it I saw the little button on the steering wheel that looked like a face that was talking... I thought "sweet, it has bluetooth." Then I realized that it was only a mute button for the stereo. Still love the vehicle. Looking forward to reading more on these forums.

first day of ownership and already problems.

i let turned the car on (not the engine) to play with the dvd player and radio, and after about 15 minutes, the car displayed some warning messages:

1) service battery charging system
2) Service stabilitrak
3) service traction control

What the heck? Now the car won't start. Seems the battery is near dead (lights still turn on in the car and nav still works).

Could the battery just be bad? How long is an acceptable amount of time to listen to the radio without the engine being on?

Default well...

1. make sure you had the key in the first postion (ACC) and not run.

2. not long. at this point, you may have a 4 year old battery. it takes a lot of juice to power that stuff...

3. I replaced my 09 battery (in 09) with a yellow top. I can now listen to the radio (sat nav) 2+ hours then start the truck right up.

4. yes, you just have a dead battery, jump it, or let it sit a few hours and it may start.

I've had a red and now yellow top, and can say I am very happy with them.

get a new battery, the best one you can afford - these things eat up power when off. like Sabr said, make sure the key is in the 1st position not "run" where all the guages are on and fuel pump is primed.
good luck and enjoy!

Great info... I really appreciate it. I jumped the vehicle and everything seems back to normal. I probably did have it in the "run" position. And I probably underestimated the amount of time. it was probably like 25-30 minutes now that I think about it.

Now... off to the local gas station!

No problem.

Being a 2007, I can only assume it's the factory battery... the average life span is only 4-5 years... so if you plan on watching Lord of the Rings on DVD in your car... i'd suggest a new one...

also check your brakes, as 4 years, if they are factory, they will be shot soon.

finally, like all used cars, check all fluid levels, brake, coolant, oil, tranny, etc.

also check your engine air filter

booyaLTZ: Welcome to the forum.

Make sure that the battery run-down software upgrade has been performed.

If it's the original battery, I'd be very surprised. Most of the '07 OEM batteries barely made it to thru warranty period. My '07 battery died in two years. Like the others said, this beast uses a lot of power. My new one gives me a "Low battery, Start Engine Now" message and shuts down radio and HVAC if I leave the key in the Run position for about a minute or less.

Whether the brakes are in need of replacing at 30K depends on the previous drivers. My dealer checks the brakes for free when they change the oil along w/ a lot of other things. Don't know if they all do that or not.

That mute button works w/ OnStar I think. Check the OnStar book if it's still w/ the truck.
