Default Oil Change

So I recently bought a 2001 Chevy Tahoe 2wd 5.3V (175,060 mileage) I noticed something when I checked the oil deep stick it was 6 inches above max level, so I changed the oil "full synthetic". I added 5 quarts checked the deep oil deep stick and it was way over the max level. Is this crazy or what. I thought it holds 6 quarts of oil? I ran the engine for about 15 mins then waited another 15 mins and rechecked the oil and it is still way over the max level. When I removed the drain plug and filter oil I checked deep stick oil level was gone.

The old oil came from the tahoe had only 5 quarts. I wonder if someone left a rag or foreign objects inside the engine. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum. Assuming that the crankcase is not full of sludge or some other foreign object taking up space, I would say you might have the wrong dipstick. Since you just changed the oil, I'm assuming that nothing like sludge was coming out.

I'm moving your post to the Tahoe section of the form where it will get more views.

I'll second the wrong dipstick for the motor that's in it. May not be the original engine but the original dipstick or visa versa.
