Default out of nowhere tranny failure

2002 suburban, 100k km on it, trany had no signs of failure (no slips, clunks, delays etc..) then today I got about 2 minutes out of town and a loud wirrrrring noise and I stopped moving. Every gear I select, even in park its making this noise and will move forward in gear but when I accelerate it goes nowhere, noise just get louder with RPM increase. I was able to limp it home in gear since the road is flat but I could not give it any throttle orI would just sit there.I checked fluid level and smell, everthing seems fine. Clutches or torque converter maybe?

Yup, same think happened with my 2003 Suburban with 60k , it was the "seashell" gear in the tranny that cracked , total repair was $1800, thankfully it was covered under my GM extended warranty

Yes I think your correct, Checked it out again today, all gears work except reverse, phoned up a tranny specialist and he told me $1600 repair, said it was quite common on the 4L60E tranny. Said he had an aftermarket fix for it so that it won't happen again.

"Sun gear shell" actually.
Transmissions use a "planetary" gear arrangement, and playing on that concept, part of that arrangement is called the sun gear.

I stand corrected , I wasn't listening well to the name of the gear , just wanted to hear him say it's covered under warranty !!

This problem was corrected in the newer 4L65E units.

The problem with the sun gear is not one of strength, it is a lubrication (or lack there of) issue.
The fix is to cut to cut several slots in the Sun Gear Shell to allow for better lubrication flow to the bearing and planetary gear assembly, virtually all transmission shops worth their weight in dog poop will perform this little modification so they don't have to eat the transmission under their own warranty but make certain just the same.

Newbie quest: Can this repair be done before breakdown more cheaply or is it better to simply wait until it goes out and then do the repair/modification?

Thanks in advance, wep
