painting rear tail lights
I'm going to take mine to a paint shop that did my friends Duramax. They use the right paint and guarantee that they won't crack over time (I live in AZ so it has to take the heat). They charge $65 - $70.00 if you take them off and drop them off. It's a little pricey for something you "could" do yourself but the pro's did an awesome job. They use a candy coat of smoke which makes the lights look completely black until the brake is applied and then the light sines through bright red.
I might give a couple shops in your area a call to see if they can do the work.

On my old car I smoked the tail lights and it turned out great. I purchased a can of smoke tail light tint, which allowed light through, and I taped over the white reverse lights so I could have unobstructed lighting for reversing. Otherwise I gave them two coats of paint and they were the perfect darkness.
You may want to check with your local vehicle equipment and safety act to ensure there is nothing in against you doing this. Where I live it simply stated that brake lights "must emit a red light" and nothing further regarding brightness.
