painting trim molding
has anybody had success removing the trim I circled in the picture and painting it and then putting it back on?
what about painting the exterior door handles?

I've painted similar. Unless the trim is coming off, I would not remove it. Paint it in place, it saves a lot of work. Mask it off good and take your time.
I would paint it with SEM paint, it is made for plastic and rubber. I've used it for 15 years with great results. They can custom match any color and they are very helpful. Sometimes they can match the paint by the color codes on your Vin# or you can send them a small piece (which they send back). Preparation is very important, they can tell you the steps.
Another thing you could do, is paint the trim a contrasting color, such as black for example. That way you don't have to worry about matching.

Good move
SEM is a little expensive, but worth it! Some auto supply stores carry standard colors, then there's ebay and Amazon.
