Hi,

Does anyone know how to replace the positive/negative battery cable bolt? I have a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe and corrosion has eaten it so bad that it needs to be replaced. or Do I have to replace the whole positive/negative battery cable.

Welcome to the forum. If it's corroded so bad you can't turn the bolt to remove the bolt (assuming you have the original side terminal cables), then you can try to saw the head off and pull the cable off. Then remove the remainder of the bolt from the battery with visegrips. If none of that works, then you're probably looking a new battery and a set of cables. []

Thanks for the welcome greeting and advise.

However, I just bought a new battery from the dealer. I can take the bolt off the old battery. The problem is that I don't want to use the corroded battery cable bolt back on the new battery.

So my question is, is there a way to replace the just the bolt? If so, how can that be done. (or)
Do I need to replace the whole positive battery cable?

Yeah, you can just replace the bolt. I believe the first one was a captive bolt but you can just replace it with one of the proper size and length. I think the original is either 5/16" or 3/8". Not sure on length but just don't want it to bottom out.

Update I had to replace the whole positive battery cable (~$125 OEM). They have aftermarket replacements for the bolt but the whole cable was corroded pretty bad so I decided to replace the whole thing. BTW, delears carry the bolt. To remove it you have to push pretty hard on it to pop out of the rubber insulation. Then the rubber insulation slips off "O" connection of the cable. To put it back together its easier to push the bolt through the bottom part of the insulation (side facing the battery) and then insert the "O" connection by stretching the rubber insualation to allow the bolt to go throw"O" connetion. I hope this makes sense.

Again, I did this on a 2001 Chevy Tahoe.
