I have used both DIC and manual calculations and find they are fairly close, best thing to do is pick one and stick with it, actual mpg is not as important as the averages you see over time... I have noticed a drop off in mine but its also winter so mpg is going to go down with extended idling for warming up and sitting in more traffic due to poor weather conditions....cold weather can keep your vehicle in open loop for a bit longer too using more fuel....once the vehicle is fully warmed up (coolant wise) it goes to closed loop and fuel is metered a bit better and mpg can improve...

Moral of the story is, don't go fixin' what aint broke...if you are over 100k miles do a tune up, if not, wait till spring and check those numbers and see if they have gotten better...

Default OMG its horrible!

So i recently picked up a 2001 Suburban 2500 to replace my aging 1991 Burb. I do a lot of towing, and pushing the old girl hard made my mileage in the 7 mpg range. So i now have this 01 2500 6.0 thinking that with the increased power i wouldnt have to push it hard and i'd get somewhat better mileage. Well my first tank with NO towing i got 9.35 MPG! yes its winter, and yes most of the tank was in town, but i was fairly gentle with the throttle so it's got me worried that this is what i can expect? I may end up no better than my old one if I cant figure out how to improve it!

update... the engine was replaced at 180k with a motor with 130k. the new motor has been in and running for about 500 - 600 miles.

Welcome to the forum...
A 4x4 2500 weights about 8600 lbs, the same 2 wheel drive 1500 weights less than 5000 lbs, that extra 3600 lbs has be be moved at a cost.... I'd call a 2.34 mile per gallon and pretty good improvement...

Thank you,

well i'd agree if that improvement was when towing...my 91 was getting around 11 in town, 7 towing. my 9.3 mpg is unloaded, not towing. on another note...WOW i had no idea that the 2500 was so much heavier! that frame must be really beefy! I'm going to get together with a friend to see if he can use his scanner to monitor some sensors and see if everything looks good. Also i need to check my hwy mileage...although i don't want to just drive around without a necessary destination....costs too much for that!

hmm...according to automobile-catalog.com the 1500 4x4 weighs 5121 lbs and the 2500 4x4 weighs 5758 lbs... that seems like a more realistic weight increase for the 2500. i dont know how reliable their numbers are however. the gvwr for the two models is 7200 for the 1500, and 8600 for the 2500.

Default Fuel economy at high mileage

Just did a 100 mile run from Kissimmee Florida to Ocala. Did not exceed speed limits but heavy traffic all the way. Mix of town and highway. It ended up being 21.3 mpg. 275105 miles. It does have a second engine but this one has 155k on it. Sorry forgot to that it's a 2008 Z71 2wd.
