QUESTION about 8.1 Suburban towing capacity
OK, so I've posted in RV forums about this, and I can't get a straight answer. I'm looking to purchase a 2000-2006 Chevy Suburban 2500 with the 8.1L Vortec engine. Why? I want to tow a 5th wheel motorhome, the Fleetwood Avion to be exact. But is this feasible? Fleetwood Avions are about 11,700 lbs stock, most likely 15,000 lbs loaded at most. According to the 8.1 owner's manual, it says with the 4.10 axle ratio, maximum trailer weight is 12,000 lbs, but GCWR is 19,000 lbs. HOWEVER, this does not include a device known as the Automated Safety Hitch System. https://www.safetytowingsystems.com/ It says "So for a normal 5er, you'd need the Trailer Toad 5000SD, which lists for $3,795 and has max hitch weight of 3,500 pounds. That's a max wet and loaded trailer weight of about 17,000 pounds or a very big 5er." In addition to that, ""Basically, any three-quarter ton vehicle that has the same engine, transmission and gear ratio combo as the one-ton counterpart, it is capable of towing the same as the one-ton with the Automated Safety Hitch System. Note: Some Ford and Ram three-quarter ton vehicles may require a change in gear ratio to achieve the one-ton dually towing capacity. Since both have a 3.73 gear ratio, the Chevrolet/GM 2500 Duramax can tow the same as the 3500 Duramax dually with the Automated Safety Hitch System."
Is this possible or not? What is the maximum a 8.1 Suburban can actually tow? Help would be greatly appreciated.
