Rear differential question
I’m going try to make this as short as possible
the skinny
I have an 04 Yukon SLT part time 4wd this vehicle had that option installed it’s basically AWD with a 4LO switch 3:73 gears.I run 33’s on it and love the way the truck sits!gas mileage is not the greatest but I knew it would not be!
with 195k truck still runs good!body is in very good shape other than a small rust spot starting to develop on one of the rockers.I have some tedious things going wrong here and there so if were to keep it I just don’t think it’s worth it with the mileage so I’ve started poking around!
a buddy of mine who comes across these vehicles a bit I actually bought the Yukon from him has a 05 Tahoe LS it has none of the creature comforts of the Yukon except the leather which has been completely redone along with the headliner the creature comforts are not a deal breaker as the body is in great shape and the interior well it looks showroom!the hoe has only 132k 65k less than my Yukon and a new tranny with less than 10k to boot!the thing that has me thinking is the gearing he’s asking 6500 for it I could probably shave some money off but it has 3:42 gears!
Im not sure about the gears I want to run 33’s and maybe not definitely, but I might want to give it a little lift.I’m not sure yet on that!even if I don’t lift it I’ve heard and read 3:42’s are not the greatest.I’m used to my gears!my Yukon has some pep to it and I don’t want to lose that,I don’t go off road and don’t really tow at all other than to help someone out here and there so I’m not concerned with the gears and towing. As mentioned though I like the get up and go of my gears now!we do get a fair amount of snow here I live in the northeast and the Yukon handles it with ease!I’ll occasionally help someone with a tow here and there but it’s not very often!
if the Tahoe had 3:73’s I would be more inclined to jump on it but having 3:42’s I’m not sure if I want to pay that amount of money then hate the gears and wind up wanting to swap them out anyway! I know I need to drive the truck to get a feel for it,I can always ask my buddy to swap my tires and drive it with my 33’s not sure if they will fit though!
im just trying to field some opinions from some guys who have run both sets of gears with 33’s and get a straight up honest opinion. It’s hard to come by vehicles in this good of shape up here they either have high mileage and good body’s or vice versa this has a mixture of both I much prefer to have the lower mileage as I know plenty of body men.My preference is to get into a Z71 love the look of those trucks!but those are near impossible to find up here for a reasonable price half way decent!
thanks

the 3.73 was put in the 4wd and the 3.42 was put in the 2wd so if it has a 4 low its 3.73 gearing which it gives you 6000 lbs of towing
