Debbie,

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your Equinox. You will definitely want to address the issue with the rear hatch closing too quickly. Unfortunately the rear hatch shocks on your Equniox can be a problem, as 73shark noted. You should be able to get a new set of hatch shocks for a reasonable price from your local autoparts store, or you can order them online from Amazon, Rockauto, etc. I found this video online that shows you how to replace the struts. As you have found out, the rear hatch is heavy and will need to be supported when you replace the struts. You will need help supporting it. You can also use a 2 x 4 to help hold one side, while you are working on the other side.

Good Luck with your repair.

I watched that video when I was looking for info. No way I can do the replacement. I’m 60 year-old Girlie-girl! I was looking for info to figure out if it was a way I could reset it or if it was going to cost me. I’m on super tight budget! Thank you all for info! It was bad news—gonna cost $, but that’s what I needed to know.

Remember - there may be two different hatch struts, one for window part only, like on my 2005.

Our 2005 doesn't have the automatic-opening/closing B.S., and after first replacements lasted only a few years, I ordered struts with 10 psi more strength.

I have a 2010 Chevy Equinox, and have the same issue. The dealer quoted me $991 to fix it, which is pretty high for a common Chevy problem. You can find further information on this issue at: https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-...espite-recall/
