Default Rear parking assist unavailable

Has anyone seen this before? Every so often I back up and the back up camera is not showing up on the screen and there is a message saying rear parking assist is unavailable (or something to that extent). Its happening more often than not. Any info is appreciated! Thanks.

I discovered that I got the same message and found out that it happened when I put it in Reverse and then released the parking brake. The parking brake disables the parking assist function. Once the parking brake was released, I got the three lites on signalling that the assist function was active.

Hmm...i'll have to test that theory out. Shouldnt work either way? I wouldthink it shouldnt matter if the parking is released before igo into reverse. By then again i didntdesign the vehicl. Its happening almost everyday now. its a mixture 3 things working or not working all at once or one or two at a time. The rear camera shows nothing on front screen or the rear park assist doesnt work, only shows one red light, or the navigation doesnt work properly, by not working properly i mean that the "marker" that depicts the vehicle doesnt move freely, it'll jump forward then jump backward andit never shows the current street im on. Its pretty annoying to have to pull over and restart the truck to get its bearings again. And most of the time the problem is still there after i restart the truck? are these issues related? anyone else out there whos had this problem besides myself and 73shark?

Sorry for bring up an old thread from the dead...

I have been having a similar issue and was wondering if you had determined the cause of yours?

I have the same issue happen with mine and it seems to only happen when I use the parking brake. As long as I don't use the parking brake, the rear park assist always works.

The last couple of times, it has ended up blowing the amplifier fuse for some reason. When this happens, there is no sound at all in the Tahoe. No radio, TV, or even the blinking sound for turn signals.

This is very odd, seems as though something is wrong with the parking brake.

Hopefully I won't get flamed, but I've never used the parking brake, well almost never, I use it when parking on a hill with a trailer on the truck... (and wheel chalks when needed)

But my point is, under 99.9% of driving conditions... what's wrong with "Park"?

I've parked my Tahoe on a hill in 'park' and its never moved, I've parked my Jeep on a 45+ degree hill in 'park' and it holds no problem... when my friend (in his stick jeep) tried the same, the parking brake didn't come close to holding...

so... why is everyone using the parking brake? Didn't the automatic tranny make that obsolete?

I use it every time I park, I think its just agood practice, and if you knew just how small and insignificant the little sprag is that "parks" the transmission you might reconsider. That little finger is holding back 5000 pounds ofcrushing steel of death, a little extra help from the parking brake never hurts...
Not to mention you have to have a functioning parking brake for a state inspection (In Texas)and regular use of the parking brake helps keep it adjusted and working should you need it for its intended use.
I have also experience "transmission lock" in other vehicles where someone didn't set the parking brake prior to parking on an incline and letting the vehicle load the sprag and making it nearly impossible to take it out of park.

oh and on the back up portion I know if you back up kinda quickly the backup sensors dont work (best backwards driver ever next to mater)and I think it knows if you have something in the reciver hitch, as when i plug in my bicycle carrier to the receiver I could swear that it disables the backup sensors....

Also when parking on a hill, one should set the parking brake prior to putting in Park so that the brake is holding the vehicle and keeps the stress off that itty, bitty sprag thingy. Some front wheel drive vehicles (early Chrysler minivans for example) if put in Park on a hill w/o using the parking brake would be almost impossible to get out of Park due to the pressure on the sprag and the short lever arm on the tranny. Learned this from experience.

Be cool and use your parking brake. Better than using fog lites in the daytime.

Edit: Sorry in2pro, didn't read your last line.

I never figured it out. BUT at the time I had the Lockpick installed, and I swear as soon as that thing was installed this issue and other GPS issues appeared. I contacted the creators of it and they just brushed me off saying my Tahoe needed updates. I mean seriously they brushed me off big time. I was upset but I couldnt really prove that it was the lockpick, so when I found out they were doing an offer for an updated lockpick for like $20 bux or some price close to that, I traded my old lockpick, they sent me a newer version of the lockpick, and guess what, all my issues seemed to have magically disappeared! Ever since I installed the newlock pick, I never had the issues anymore. But I also never tried the releasing the e brake before I went into reverse.

But turbo if you dont have the old style lockpick in your tahoe, I would bring it to the dealer and let them figure it out, dont worry about being a bug a boo about it either, you paid good money for your tahoe. If they cant figure it out, try another dealer, and then give GM cust. service a call if no one can seem to figure it out. I wish ya luck, and Im sorry I wasnt of any help.

One last thing, thank God gas is going down baby!! WHOO HOO! =)

I was curious so I tried this in my '07 LTZ. No matter what, I couldn't get it to screw up like this. I've never had the rear park assist be "off" unless I actually had a trailer hooked up. If you don't have a lockpick, I'd guess there is a problem.
