Default Rim Refinishing

Anyone had their rims refinished? How did it turn out and are you happy with results? My rims have no shape defects or damage but just clear coat peeling and scratches from putting weights on outside of rim.

I got a quote on getting my polish alum 20"s redone for about $350. He said they remove damaged clear coat, paint twice, clear coat, paint again and clear coat again. (his process description) He said the mid paint clear coat helps get more shine.

Not exactly sure on number of coats...other than I know there was a clear coat in between paint coats.

Since they are clear coated polished aluminum, I'm not sure why they are putting any paint on them. Seems like all they need to do is strip, repolish and clear coat.

Or did you get the painted 5 spoke wheels?

I think the paint is replacing the repolish in their method.

If they are painting, then they won't be shiny, silver looking like the OEM wheels.

i went to the tire shop today and 2 of my rims got scratched.

the tire place is going to take care of things question i have, are the rims from a 2010 tahoe (polished aluminum) marked any differently than those from a 2012? are they date coded?

I have a general question about this. Just recently I had the OEM rims put back on my wife's car with a new set of tires. Same type as discussed here--clear-coated polished aluminum. The only marks on them were from the original clip-on wheel weights.

I asked the tire shop's service writer to use stick-on weights on the inside of the rims (which I have on my Suburban's XD Series chrome rims). He told me that my rims were designed to use the clip-ons and he didn't recommend the stick-on type. I'm guessing that his tech overruled him, though--the stick-on weights were installed anyway and I'm not noticing any difference in the way the car handles.

Anyone have any insight? Are rims designed to use only one type of weight?

The new "flangeless" wheels can only use stick-ons on the inside of the wheel.
