Rod Knock
My daughter thought that only the oil change guys check the oil and since it wasnt leaking that there was no problem. Well, she now knows that it can be a problem because now she has the ROD KNOCK!. It's a 98' Tahoe with 5.7 Vortec
Question: If I pulled the motor, is it possible or even feaseable to put in new rod and bearing or is the crank toast and the motor pretty much shot? What would be a good solution. Used engine for $800 / short block $400-500. Will a 350 short block work with this motor or do I need a 5.7 Vortec short block.
If I found a say carborated or earlier EFI, would that swap over with out too much trouble? Or toss a road flare in it and walk away. GEEZ

Chances are she will need a new crank. I would recomend looking into a company like Jasper. They make decently priced rebuilt engines with a good warranty. Ask your local automotive shop about pricing on one installed. Also, the 5.7 is a 350.

Thanks for your reply. Since its a 350, will any late model 350 long block, say a 1996 thru 2000 work for transferring over the "Vortec" stuff on my bad engine over to the long block or does it need to be a Vortec block?

I would stick with the vortec family of 350s 1996 through 2000 just to be on the safe side. They are very common to find some with fairly low miles in a boneyard.
