Default Shopping for used Suburban

We have an 07 'Burb and really like it,,, aside from it having that funky engine that ate oil every 1000-1300 miles,,, and the warranty expired before Chevy admitted the motor was a problem,,,, we still like the "Burb"
So looking for a second bum-around vehicle,,,,I have found many within 100 miles of my home,,,,and less than 150k miles on them,, sort of my criteria. My budget , since it is a fun car,, to ,,,,go to coffee, haul kids to school, and pull the pontoon boat to river,, I am looking at anything from late 90-s up to 2002-03. Any known significant issues in that time span for the Burd or GMC Yukon,,,,,I know there are more practical vehicles perhaps,,,, but I am old enough to start having fun again,, no need to be practical any more,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The most important thing to get is the maintenance records of the vehicle. If the oil and filters were changed regularly at around 4000 miles, it will usually be a good reliable truck.

I agree with this 200%!! I am baffled that A LOT of people buy vehicles with zero service records then find out right after buying it they bought a sludge monster.

2000-2006 were pretty good trucks. My buddy now owns my '01 and it has 235k with the original engine and trans.

Common trouble spots/money pits for those trucks are front wheel bearing/hub assemblies, the fuel pump, window regulators, A/C system, exhaust manifold leaks and brakes. The engine is rock solid, and the trans is fine if it hasn't been abused. Overall, pretty darn good vehicles.

The '07 and newer 5.3 engines have AFM. That's your oil consumption problem.

The' 06 and older 5.3 engines do not have AFM and are pretty bulletproof.

Soooooooooooo,, I got the 2002 Suburban,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the ignition key is a classic 'Dumb Key',, which is great,,,,,,,,,,, I can have keys made at hardware store,,,,,,,,,,, . in 2002, did GM issue key fobs with their Burb-s ?? this car did not have any with it,,,, so,, can I get aftermarket fobs that may possibly talk to the door locks,, for key-less entry,,,,, ???

Aftermarket key fobs are super easy to program on these vehicles. And, if they lose their programing they can be reprogrammed in 30 seconds wherever you are. My 2000 has had every issue common to these trucks. The tow/haul - easy fix, hard to adjust parking brakes - till you know how, replace the GM speakers - cheap and easy, rotted out drivers seat leather - reupholstered, transmission filter hard to service - no it isn't, just messy, etc, etc.. Congrats!! Great old trucks!!

Thanks all for your input..... I found a couple other lil' things that need some tweaking,,,cable on left side center seat that releases the seat back, is broken,,,, got one ordered,,,, and from time to time,,, the ABS and park brake dash lights come on,,,, my brother-in-law had that on his Malibu,,, it was the sensor and float in master cylinder reservoir that was tricking the computer into thinking it was low on fluid,,,, pretty easy fix,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, thanks again guys !!!!!
