Question Something i have always done, was told yesterday not a good idea

I installed a BarryGrant Speed Demon 750Vac sec carb..The Qjet was toast.

For all the years i have been doing cars i always back probed found the field wire and piggy backed on that wire.Seems like a perfectly good idea to me when off..NO voltage, when running you get the voltage the alt is producing.

He is one of my techs and is concerned it will damage the choke.Help an ol' dog learn some new tricks.I have used electric for this hook for years.

I don't see an issue with it.

I see no problem with that method, but then I am older than you and maybe we are just crazy.

Where did you buy the Barry Grant Speed Demon? I need a rebuild kit and seems the Web site isn't selling anything or is down.

Well I am pushing 54 not alot with electric chokes. My olds is a 2GC. When I can afford a quad intake, and carb, it will have that. I don't understand the concern, key on 12 volts, key off 0 volts???

So, did the kid say why "it will damage the choke," like the alternator output being ~14V vs. the choke needing 12V? Or, was it a case of needing a fused wire?
