GM released a bulletin a while back (couldnt find it a minute ago) about customers using lotion and then grabbing the steering wheel making the finish peel. i dont know what they want to do about it. sounds like they should make covers that dont peel. if there is a fix for it i will post.

here are some numbers and prices yall want to replace. price is list so yall know the dealership isnt messing you around.

mech. brush LH 15255055 RH 15255057 L$110.65 each
ebony LH 15255034 RH 15255097 L$34.61 L$32.68
silver LH 15844709 RH 15844710 L$59.56 L$32.98

i wouldnt go back with ebony they are the ones that peel all the time. mechanical brush and silver would be the best replacement. or figure out where this guy got the wood grain. : )

Sorry. I've been out of town...Dam Colts...anyway, the pieces go over the existing ones with double sided tape. They send a solution to clean the surface and prepare it for adhesion. Fit was good but with anything like this there is a little mismatch. Install was very easy and wood matches almost perfectly. I'm satisfied with them. I think to replace the factory ones you have to remove the airbag. I found a link for steering wheel replacement that shows how to remove the bag and it didn't look to bad if you want to go that route.

Another question. Did the solution they sent to prep the surface remove the remaining rubber or just clean it? I kind of like the shiny black surface under the flaking rubber if I could just find what to use to safely remove it without damaging the plastic underneath. Jim

The preps that I've used in the past were just an alcohol swab which probably won't remove the coating. Might try scraping the coating off in the areas that the 3M tape will contact and then preping them.

There were two swabs. The first was just an alcohol swab that cleaned only and the second was an adhesion product that was supposed to help the tape stick better.

My quick fix was removing all of the rubber covering. Took about 90 minutes. When I tire of the black plastic then I'll cover it. Tried to post a pic but couldn't. Will try later.

See if this works. Sorry about the finger prints but it was dark in my garage and I didn't see them until I posted the pic.
