Tahoe & Suburban The power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.

Even cooler was me limping this beast home after figuring out the transfer case completely failed. From the bridge to the southwest corner of MI.
I removed the front driveshaft and shift motor at the bridge, then used channel locks to put her in some gear to get her home. She would pop out a few times. (4) on the way back to home.

What gear did you choose for that drive? Does your Burb have the 6.0 or the 8.1? I want a 6.0, 2500 burb. I'm using my 150, 5.3 to tow my camper, and it does OK. But, the 2500, 6.0 would do so much better.

Since I removed the shift motor and selected a gear randomly, I really don’t know. I think it might have been 2WD, but since the front shaft was removed, it didn’t matter, as long as the vehicle moved forward. Lol.
I have the 6.0L and considering some upgrades. Either upgrading the 6.0L with turbo, or just dropping the 6.6L diesel in it. I’ve done a lot of research on that. There are a few conversions out there, and a lot more companies that offer it. Biggest issue is needing a donor truck for random parts.
I do know when the government orders the 3/4 ton they get the Duramax but civilians do not. They also made a 3500
version. Haven’t found but one of those online. @falconbrother

The government does not/did not ever get Duramax Suburbans. No such vehicle ever rolled off a GM assembly line. All 2500 and 3500 Suburbans have the 6.0 gas engine.

The last diesel GM put in a Suburban was the pre-2000 OBS trucks.

Back to your original post - what were you doing to cause such a catastrophic failure of the transfer case? How much were you abusing it?
