What would cause water to spue out of where this hose goes into the intake (with a brass fitting) by the thermostat housing? No weeping from water pump, heater was still working. For no apparent reason after leaving the gas station from filling up and reentering the hwy I started leaving steam behind me like crazy. Took it to aservice stationand they told me the intake manifold gaskets (2) were gone and it would cost $800 to fix. I didn't buy this and limped my poorhoe home with the rad capundone becauseI started losing water faster than I could keep it in the rad (rad hoses could use replacing but were still working fine). Engine was heating up to 213*celsius and normally sits around 190.Other end of this hose disappears down by exhaust manifold at rear of engine. Can anyone tell me what this hose is? 1996 5.7 4X4 Tahoe 190k kms., none of the manuals I have tell me what it's for. The pics are taken looking at the driver's side of the engine.

EGR pipe.

It directs hot exhaust gases from the EGR valve at the back of the engine to the intake manifold.

My bad,
The protective cover threw me off.
It is the heater supply hose, it exits the manifold and runs to the back of the engine and then over the bell housing and into the heater core at the passenger side firewall.

It is very common for the brass or silver metal fitting to leak, there is a plastic retainer that holds the nipple into this flange fitting, this part can be purchased at the dealer for cheap and takes about 2 minutes to install.

ZX1100F1,
Thanks so much. Is it common for the intake to go on these 5.7 motors?

and I meant to add that I will try this fix first (thinking faster than I can type) and thenthe question about the intake. Also I hope you don't mind me picking your brain but is it a 2 part intake or 1. Guys at the shop said there are both for that year and of course quoted me on the most expensive fix. If it turns out to be the intake problem, would I be able to fix this myself or should I take it to a shop?

Yes 1996 is the 1st year of the Vortec 5.7 (255 hp) and it is a two piece intake, the top part is black plastic and has a large o-ring that seals it to the lower part, the lower part is gasketed normally to the heads.

It is somewhat common for the intakes to need a reseal job, especially if driven hard.
