Default Upgraded to OEM 20's....TPM Question...Pics Here Too

I upgraded to the OEM 20"s yesterday which I bought on EBay recently. My question is in regards to the Tire Pressure Monitors (TPM). The Seller on EBay stated that the TPM were removed but the TPM stems were left on. I'm not real smart when it comes to these technical things on vehicles but I thought I was going to have to take the TPM off my OEM 17"s and put them on the new wheels. I didn't have a chance to take them to the dealer to do the TPMswitch but decided to put the 20"s on anyway. Expected to get the ERROR message on the Dash when I scroll through the DIC but to my suprise I didn't. Is it possible that the guy left the TPMs on or is the stems left on enough to give a reading to the DIC??? My 17"s had the Metallic color TPM's and I know they also make Black TPM's. I have some close up pics of the wheels and the Black valve stems if it helps any.

Testing some picture posting methods. This may or may not work.

Can't help you on the rims too much. I have the older Silver stemmed ones. Should get error without the TPM. You need more than the stem.

To post pics that are larger, hit the icon in upper right coner of the "Post reply" box. (Yellow, looks like a mountain and sun) Paste the web address in.

What timimg..!!!
Okay… So I bought some take-off and replaced the 17s with 20s… The tires I purchased already had sensors & I want to be sure the sensor in the take-offs are working before I sell the 17s with the sensors that are new. The dash info meter says that each tire is 34-35lbs… Is this data correct..? I was thinking that I would have the dealer rest that setting..? Also, how accurate / real-time are the tire readings… At one point I had one tire off the truck and the information stated that there was 35 lbs in that tire....

I believe it is real-time info since the way you relearn new positions is by letting out air. Not sure what the range is tho. No reason for it not to work if the wheel isn't mounted.

I've got more information today on the DIC readings. I went to a local gas station that has a new digital tire pressure gauge b/c mine was a little old. I filled each tireto 35lbs to see if my DIC would reflect that and it didn't. Each tire in the DIC showed up at 29lbs......Not sure why. I may try to do the manual relearn but I'm still confused as to why I'm even getting a reading at all unless the guy who sold them to me ACTUALLY didn't take the TPM's off. Which he said he did. Is there any way to actually know if there in there without taking the tires off??????

I thnk the best thing to do just short of breaking down the wheels is to do the relearn the wheels. This will force communcation between the sensor (like Shark said) and the CPU of the truck. At that time there will or will not be sensors to relearn the tires.. I see your point, just for kicks I took the tire 30 feet away and it still showed 35lbs on the DIC for the RR tire... No Error Message.. Today we drove a few miles on the new rubber and the psi went +/- 1 lb here & there.... I have NOT tried to relearn the tires since I plan to go to the dealer and get the computer flashed to update the new tire settings... I think thats important for tranny, brake, and mph settings..??

Ask the dealer to use the TPMS relearn procedure using the J-46079 TPMS reset tool. It must be updated with either v.2.0 or v.3.3 software to trigger an '07 Tahoe.

Either use the tool, or do it manually with pressure up/down as follows (per ZX1100):

Set the parking brake.
Turn the ignition switch to RUN with the engine off.
Using the DIC, press the vehicle information button until the RELEARN TIRE POSITIONS message displays. If your vehicle does not have the DIC buttons, press the trip odometer reset stem located on the instrument panel cluster until the RELEARN TIRE POSITIONS message displays.
If your vehicle has the DIC buttons, press the set/reset button. The horn will sound twice to indicate the TPMS receiver is ready, and the TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message will display. If your vehicle does not have the DIC buttons, press and hold the trip odometer reset stem until the horn chirps twice and the TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message is displayed.
Start with the driver's side front tire.
Remove the valve cap from the valve cap stem. Activate the TPMS sensor by increasing or decreasing the tire's air pressure for five seconds, or until a horn chirp sounds. The horn chirp, which make take up to 30 seconds to sound, confirms that the sensor identification code has been matched to this tire and wheel position. To decrease air-pressure out of a tire you can use the pointed end of the valve cap, a pencil-style air pressure gage, or a key.
Proceed to the passenger's side front tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 6.
Proceed to the passenger's side rear tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 6.
Proceed to the driver's side rear tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 6.
After hearing the confirming horn chirp for the driver's side rear tire, the horn chirp will sound two more times to signal the tire learning mode is no longer active. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
Set all four tires to the recommended air pressure level as indicated on the Tire and Loading Information label.
Put the valve caps back on the valve stems

O.K......It's official now! I do not have the TPMS on these wheels and tires. After driving around town all weekend withthe DICshowing tire pressure, the ERROR message finally showed up this morning when I hit 75mph on the Highway. My Solution: GMpartsdirect has the sensors for $30.21 each so I may just buy another set for the new 20"s instead of hauling the 17"s to the dealer toswitch them out (too much trouble). Then I can just add the extra $124.84 to the price of the 17"s when I sell them (much easier). Add the $50 or so bucks to flash the computer for the new settings and I should be all fixed up for under $200.00, which is what I was expecting.

Are they shipping sensors for $4??
You can get the sensors for around $100 for 4 on e-bay. Check before you order elsewhere.
Also do the reprogram to allow the truck to adjust to the 20s. It sets the ABS and stabilitrak calibrations too.
