Default upgraded steering shaft

I'm looking at upgrading the lower steering shaft with its spongy rag joint with a Jeep Cherokee unit that has universal joints. It looks like it's a drop-in mod. Anyone done this already? Any advice? From the comments in the video there's one post and reply that confuses me: "Turns out the 88-94 are just like yours, and the 95-99s are like mine- guess".
