Default Used Motor recommendations

The short of it is that I need to replace the motor in my 2000 suburban. It has the 5.3. It's not going to be daily driver so I'm not looking to drop a $3500 crate in it. Anyone have any advice on decent places to pickup a used motor especially in the DFW area and what I may be looking at to spend?
I not opposed to rebuilding it either. I saw a full rebuild kit on summit for < $600 and I'm assuming the machine work could run another $500.
Just looking for some input from guys who have been down this road with this motor.

from my standpoint you have a couple of options

not a daily driver buy from a junkyard. should be less than 1k unless the hot rodders are scarfing them up
what a little more reliability and less worry, pull it and have it rebuilt. get a good manual for this
buy a jasper or other reman motor and install it or have it installed

If you plan on keeping the truck, have the motor in it rebuilt and you will have more reliability than buying a used motor. When you buy used, you never know what you are getting!
