Default Vinyl Dye for Dash board touchup

Well, my 2003's dashboard is starting to look terrible because the vinyl is peeling/scratching off everywhere. From what I understand, this dashboard is first dyed black, and then painted tan. Does anyone know of a way that I can touch up the dash and make it look good? Someone suggested some vinyl dye by SEM. Anybody have experience with matching the color, or the technique?

Thanks!

I used some (wasn't SEM) on some Corvette door panels. It seemed more like a paint designed to adher to vinyl as opposed to a dye.

Did you ever find anything out about this? We have a 2002 Suburban, same color, same experience. Asked dealer and they basically told us, oh well it happens sometimes.

I think that most replacement soft parts are black and then painted for whatever color is needed. Cuts down on inventory. Was your dash replaced?

You might want to look at Parasol Inc. They have true dyes that are guaranteed not to chip, peel or flake. Prep will be the key. You will need to remove all of the old dye and paint. Dye companies sell chemical prep for this. Use masking tape after the surface is cleaned to double check it. If the masking tape sticks well, you are probably down to a surface ready to be dyed. If the tape does not stick well, there is still old protectant or dye on the surface.

Shoot several very light coats of the new dye onto the surface until you build up the color. The key here is not to "blind" the surface with thick coats.

Most good dye companies can custom-match your color without a problem.
