Default Water Temp Guage 94 Suburban

I have an awesome 94 Suburban with 302,000 miles - I have put just about every mile on her.
Recently the water temp gauge quit.
When I start the engine, or turn the key just before start, the gauge will will go all the way to the right, then return to 0, where it remains.
The sender on the water pump checks out OK, and when I remove the lead from it, the engine changes rpm. The the sensor affects the engine -
there is continuity from the switch, and the gauge will react, but not to the sensor.
Any Ideas- any fix?
I don't like driving without temp, and I will begin towing a trailer soon, but won't without a temp reading.
Thanks
