Default why are steering shafts being replaced?

I have been hunting for a used 2000-06 suburban and have found quite a few with replaced steering shafts. Why??? recall maybe? or is it in result to damage from being stolen or something?

It might be the ISS( intermediate steering shaft) shaft your talking about, there is alot of those that make a clicking noise. If you meant a different part please correct me.

It is the intermediate steering shaft, and if it were me I would buy one that already HAD it replaced because one that has not been replaced will need to be! I had one done on our 2003 Yukon. They made a clicking/scraping noise when turning the wheel, very annoying.

Its less then $75 for the part, Napa has a better one than OEM and its less then 10 min to replace worse case, its not a critical safety issue, just annoying. I would not decide on your purchase based on that alone.

I had a problem with the ISS on another 2000 Chevrolet model. I was getting this "rattling" or clunking feeling thru the steering wheel. In my case, it wans't replaced, but repacked with a special dampening grease. The problem was widespread as I recall, and many owners were getting a replacement shaft installed.

Nice link, thanks for posting that.

Just for the record, what peice of it actually makes the clicking noise? Does the U-joint come with the new ISS part #? I was under the impression that the ISS was down by the tire, not the actual steering shaft that comes out of the dash area, I was way off.

I eventually will change mine out when I have time, They click on my 04 tahoe & 03 silverado.
