Default Windshield crack & replacment

Took a rock to the windshield a few weeks back, but the extreme cold we have had lately even with my truck in the garage has cause it to crack
Insurance will cover it for $50
I've never had one replaced before and was wondering if anyone had any pointers/reminders/FYI's/Watch out for's, to be aware of when getting it replaced.
I'd like to get a replacement that has a UV coating, but not sure if that exist other then as an after market coating....

I know to watch out for the try to sell you new wiper blades bit....
I have also taken pictures of the full windshield so I know what it should look like after the deal is done...

they only cover $50??? what insurance do you have? I have full glass coverage with mine (not bragging or trying to make free commercials) but i would go with a reputable company. i don't know what you got down in tx but here in ny there are few companies that will accept the insurance. who ever you choose to go with just make sure they lay down a good bead of silicone around the frame. compare to the pics before and after, and watch for the mirror and wiring

$50 is my deductible, its all that it will cost me out of pocket My Ins is State Farm.

I was going to have it done this week, but opted to hold off until the holidays were over so I don't end up with the "hurry up we want to get out of here for the holidays" job

I was going to go the the dealership, but the insurance folks said they will most likely 3rd party it out anyway...

I just had the same thing happen 3 months ago and my insurance had safelight auto glass replace it. I paid an extra 25 $ for them to come to the house and do it. I was and am still happy with the job they did. I've been thinking of gettin a deflector of some sorts though to try and not have this happen again.

I have the deflector, my windshield has stayed cleaner of bugs I think, but as you can see the rock chip came in kind of low on the glass, I think the rock had a high arc trajectory...
Safe-lite was the first place I thought of too, they have done chip repairs for myself, wife and daughters vehicles, but I haven't heard much about full windshield replacements...

Well the good folks over a Safelite Glass were able to take care of me.
They were nice enough to let me stand in the shop and take a few pictures of the process.
The tech Kaleb was very knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the process and the steps he was doing

The process took about 2hrs, the replacement glass is an aftermarket, I would have preferred OEM, but it would have to have been special ordered and would have had a up-charge since my vehicle is more then 5 yrs old. Newer (with in 2 yrs old) vehicles are eligible for OEM glass as a replacement.

Safelite uses a patented wire system to cut the factory seal (pinch weld)
The process leaves most of the seal in place, and the tech trims it down.
This is to have a clean surface to reseal to, the adhesive bonds to itself better then the painted surface, hence leaving some of the factory seal in place provides the best seal.

The glass used for my 07 Tahoe is the exact same glass part number used for every GMT900 model from GM, Caddi to Chevy truck,SUV and van...

The replacement glass comes with the rear-view mount already precision aligned and attached to the glass, no re-attaching the old mount.

the replacement glass also has the same factory "dots" on it but it also has the blue/green sun shade coloring above the 1SA line, the factory glass is all clear except for the dots...

They do recover the state inspection sticker and registration sticker from the old glass, the tech puts in on the new glass before installing it in the vehicle.

The windshield weights about 30-35lbs, glass for a Land Rover is about 45 lbs and is thicker... glass for a high performance Mercedes about 10 lbs...

remaining pictures of process...

The tech was very careful to place tape over exposed painted areas to protect it from any accidental chipping, a protective cover was placed over the hood and in the interior where the tech was working..
The tech wears gloves during the whole process to prevent any contamination of the bonding surfaces, after install all windows are cleaned and the vehicle vacuumed out...

Did you ask if there was any warranty on the mirror mount in case it falls off in 6 months?
