But, did you have a chance to inspect the old Ring and Pinion, were they very damaged ?

I didnt see any of the parts. I'm pretty sure the ring and pinion are new as well.

 

I took my 1994 K1500 to an independent Chevy repair specialist. He put in a new ring and pinion gear and new pinion bearings. He did the right adjustments and I am proud to say that the whining noise is gone it cost me $700 including parts. I examined the old gears and they did not look significantly worn. The mechanic said he did fell a little more play then he liked-- but it did not seem that significant, but obviously it was not right because now the noise is gone. It is so great to get rid of that noise. I can actually here people in the back seat talking. I should have taken it back when it was under warranty. It started soon after I bought it. Many have advised, in the past, it was just something I had to live with. All the high tech lubricants did work to preserve the gears, but they were not right from the start.

Probably could have been set up correctly then w/o any part replacement.

 

Two years ago, I had the same issue, after finding that the noise was loudest at the front of the rear differential. I had repaired at a local shop that specialized in differentials. Replaced both pinon bearings, Pinon seal, carrier bearings, axle bearings, axal seals and one axle shaft. $1100 dollars later, no more noise. This reminds me to change the oil at scheduled intervals. Lucky that the ring gear and pinon were in good condition, thatt would had doubled the cost of the repair. 1997 tahoe, 4wd, has over 170k miles before repair.
