Tracker 1989-2004
This compact SUV proved itself to be a fine ecnomical vehicle, good for making its way along any type of surface.

6.11.25

Hi all ;

Nate here, ; I recently purchased my son's 2000 Tracker 4 door, 2 liter J20 engine, automatic, base model .

I've been working on it two months now, trying to get it to pass the California Emissions test, the darn CEL comes on, goes off, comes back on etc. the last time I checked the OBDII codes it said EGR so I took that all apart and cleaned the passages, pipe etc. and installed a new EGR valve, light came back on and I mislaid my scanner =8-^ .

The secondary catalytic converter rattles so that's my next thing to address, where is the best place to buy new parts for this please ? .

TIA,

Looking forward to reading and learning, maybe somethings I have learned will be helpful to others .

Hello Nate. The EGR code may not be caused by the EGR valve. Here's how the PCM tests the EGR valve:

As far as parts go, I get my generic parts from rockauto.com. For dealer parts you will need the Suzuki part number and order from megazip.net or partsouq.com.

Thumbs up Helping Hands

Thank you ! .

I'm not sure what to check next as I'm an older Mechanic .

I also need to figure out what model number my 2000 base model is before either of those web sites will open their catalogs.....

By the by ;

It appears you copied that info from a factory shop manual, are they online or someplace I can buy one ? .

I'm betting my next step is to check intake manifold vacuum hoses as the fuel economy isn't very good , I'll have to see if I can find a P.C.V. valve or metered orifice .

Do this.
go to megazip.net
car parts
Suzuki
Grand Vitara

Your Tracker is going to be one of the SQ420(x) options. 420 = 4 cylinder 2.0 liter.
Then pick the CAMI model that matches your configuration.ie 4WD/2WD, A/T M/T whatever.
Look for the parts breakdown you need.

As for a manual you have two options. You can download a Suzuki manual from the Suzuki forum. Look for Service Manual SQ416... 1 of 2 and 2 of 2. And/or you can buy a 30-day subscription to Mitchell1 DIY. That would be year and model specific.

Post Interior Help ~ Cargo Area

I removed the curved hard plastic right rear interior panel and am having difficulty lining up the retainers to re install it ~ any helpful ideas, tips, trucks or links ? .

I have moved from the front seats and interior to the center to rear of the car, middle seats are now out as well as th cargo area carpet and seat belts .

All the seat belts were stiff with 25 years worth of sweat and stuff, I remove them and use a clean plastic bucket, soft bristle brush and foamy upholstery cleaner to make them soft as new again, then I use two clothes pins to hold the webbing fully un reeled so they can dry over night .

I finally got all (except the bolts & springs) the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors, I look forward to getting them all replaced and then moving on to replacing most vacuum hoses under the hood to hopefully clear the OBD II codes and get it emissions tested .

New tires (highway not off road) are inbound, I hope to have them Friday and get them mounted next week .
