Hi all,
I am a new member, I could not find a search button when I am at the Tracker thread. So I will ask the question hoping someone can direct me to an existing answer while I will keep looking simultaneously.
My nephew has a 2000 Tracker that is consuming lots of gas with check engine light on. He does not have a scanner to read fault code, he is over seas.
is there a way he can read the DTC(s) without a scanner?. since this vehicle is MY 2000, I assume it has OBD-2 not OBD-1.
In addition to bad spark plugs, bad oxygen sensor, bad air and/or fuel filter,is there something common that goes bad in 2000 Tracker that produce poor MPG?. He gave me the consumption of gas in Kilometer per tank, I converted and it was about 12 mile per gallon. If i did not make a mistake, this is very poor. Any help will be appreciated. He is a poor boy and cant afford a new vehicle.

He needs an OBD2 scanner to read the codes. Walmart sells one for $13 USD. Record the stored DTC's and report back.

 

theres a few other sensors that can cause poor mpgs. if the engine is seeing too much air enter it will dump fuel to compensate. running it too long like this can cause it to kill the catalytic converter also. amazon also sells a low dollar obd2 scanner also. i got a cheap one from amazon and one that cost a few hundred, for simple reading of codes the cheap one works but if you want to see live data you have to spend a little more. for him the cheap one will suffice
