Tracker1989-2004
This compact SUV proved itself to be a fine ecnomical vehicle, good for making its way along any type of surface. Platform: CAMI (Suzuki)
i have done a fair share of my own work over the years but this is a first for me. im trying to make sure i have all the tools i need before i start taking anything apart. ( hard to run to the store with the tracker on blocks). what size of socket do i need for the axle nut?
thanks all for your time.
Dear Nat,
I'm assuming the CV joints on your car are similar to my 2001 LT 4-door. The driver's side is no problem. Remove the wheel. Unbolt the axle from the differential. Remove the snap ring. Wiggle the axle out. The passenger side is a different story. You have to remove the shock. This is a major undertaking. The fact that you think there is an axle nut involved suggests you may be in over your head. If you decide to go forward set aside two days because the learning curve is steep. One tool you absolutely need is the Harbor Freight ball joint puller (below). It also works on the tie-rod ends. You really should have the step-by-step repair instructions in front of you while you are working. Before you do anything read through this person's experience. https://www.suzuki-forums.com/thread...1999-gv.37983/ I will try to answer any questions.
In theory you could remove the control arm but the control arm is the only thing holding the coil spring captive.
If the strut is in place and the wheel hub is fully lowered, the coil spring is still under compression.
That spring is dangerous. But even if you could remove the control arm without getting your teeth knocked out,
how would you ever get the control arm back in place? There's little to no room to get a spring compressor in there
and the spring rate is so stiff that trying to compress it with a floor jack just lifts the car off the jack stands.
